Another indicator of growth in online learning is a report from National Center for Education Statistics regarding Distance (yeah, it’s kinda 90s sounding) Learning, or as may be more commonly said these days, Digital Learning. Or even, online learning. In any case, school districts across the nation have been cutting back for the last few years, but that’s exactly why this online sector is growing and will only continue to grow. Apparently, three quarters of them plan to expand their digital offerings over the next three years, according to results of the new NCES survey. The new data looks specifically at “distance education courses” in public schools, and defines these as full-credit courses that are taught remotely through technology. Conducted in fall and winter of the 2010-2011 school year, the survey found that 55 percent of 2,310 school districts had students enrolled in these courses, ninety-six percent of which were given at the high school level.
