Cool Tool | SparkFun

SparkFun image of funLet’s hear it for STEM (and this take-charge electronics Viking, pictured). The  latest from a company full of cool tools comes with their SparkFun ProtoSnap line, a new family of products designed to lower the barrier of entry into DIY (do it yourself) electronics. Each product in the ProtoSnap line comes completely pre-assembled, with multiple components connected via solder traces on a custom PCB. This eliminates the need for soldering, breadboards, or other assembly — you can start experimenting with electronics right out of the box. Because of this form, SparkFun Education is able to teach all the foundational concepts necessary to program microcontroller technology in a much shorter amount of time than was previously possible. The ability to teach quickly is important in today’s fast-paced world where teachers have limited training time and students expect quick results. This also enables experienced users to launch quickly into more advanced programming and sensor integration. Once they’ve reached the limits of the board in its original form, they can snap apart the individual components and repurpose them in any project imaginable. There are several different products: the ProtoSnap LilyPad Development Board and LilyPad E-Sewing Kit for wearable electronics, the ProtoSnap MiniBot for beginner robotics, and the ProtoSnap ProMini for general electronics development.
